Known as the star of Cobden, the butter is now a star on the international stage, holding the title as one of the best butters in the world.

The international acclaim follows Fonterra’s success at the 2024 Dairy Industry Association of Australia (DIAA) Australian Dairy Product Awards last week, picking up 45 medals.

Fonterra’s Cobden site won 25 of these, including 13 gold and 12 silver for its products including Western Star™ butter and cream.

Fonterra regional operations manager, west, Nick Hayes said Fonterra was honoured its dairy products had again been recognised in Australia, with Western Star™ butter one of the best in the world.

“We have the utmost pride in the dairy products we make here at Cobden, and we are just blown away to say that our Western Star™ butter is one of the best in the world,” he said.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our farmers and expert butter makers at Cobden, where Western Star™ has been made for nearly 100 years.

“The quality of our farmers’ milk is the secret ingredient to our success, and we extend our thanks and congratulations to our farmers for these recent wins.”

The World Cheese Championship Contest is one of the world’s largest premier cheese, butter, and dairy products competitions, attracting the world's best dairy producers.

The DIAA awards are a pathway to the prestigious Australian Grand Dairy Awards held later in the year. Expert judges, renowned for their dairy product expertise, evaluate entries based on their exceptional technical merit.
