THERE was plenty of splashing and cheering at the Timboon pool last weekend as 158 swimmers dived in.

Sunday’s annual encouragement swim meet, organised by the Timboon Amateur Swimming Club, attracted swimmers from multiple clubs across the Barwon South West region – along with a couple from South Australia.

Ranging in age from five to 80 years, for some the meet was their first introduction to competitive swimming, while for others it was a fun, relaxed meet in the beautiful surrounds of the Timboon pool.

Across 45 events, 127 heats and 655 splashes (swimmers racing) the highlights of the day included the eight years and under kickboard race and the 4x33m freestyle relays.

The relays saw the club meet its aim of having every competitor entered in a relay team for the day.

The day was a success, thanks in large part to the band of committee volunteers and swim teachers from the Timboon club.

Organisers were also grateful for the assistance of local YMCA lifeguards, the Corangamite Shire, Warrnambool swim club, Swimming Victoria officials and local businesses.

The meet was an example of how important pools are in regional towns.

They not only provide a facility to help young people improve their swimming and the more senior swimmers to keep fit and moving, they are also a way to showcase what the local area has to offer.
