MORTLAKE’S debut Twenty20 series in the Warrnambool District League was a challenging one for the former South West title holders.

The Cats, currently enjoying their first season in the Warrnambool league, had an early round, eight-wicket loss to West Warrnambool but went on to defeat Nirranda by 58 runs in the second game.

Josh Jewell was the only Cat to reach double figures in their battle with West, making 10 before being bowled, while youngster Josh Slater finished with figures of 1/5 from his 1.2 overs.

In their clash with Nirranda, the Cats enjoyed a five wicket victory, finished with a creditable 4/145 while restricting Nirranda to 87.

Lachlan Wareham’s 47 and Neil Kelly’s 42 were the best of the batters while Clinton Baker finished with the impressive figures of 5/6 off 3.5 overs and captain todd Lamont with 2/9 off three.

The early defeat saw the Cats knocked out of the Twenty20 finals race.

In Warrnambool District’s division two competition last Saturday, Mortlake suffered a 145 run defeat at the hands of Allansford-Panmure Gold, 38 to 6/183.

Henry Smith was the only Cat to reach double figures, finishing on 14, while best of the bowlers was Will Berryman 1/21 off six.

Division four was also defeated, going down to Nestles 7/151 to 7/183.

Jason Harris 66 and Jason Hughes 29 not out were the better batsmen while Hughes also finished with figures of 4/11 from five.
