Take a drive through region’s whiskey history
LIQUOR lovers will next month have the opportunity to join a trail through the whiskey-soaked history of the south west.
The ‘Northern Leg’ of The Whiskey Trail tag along tour will begin in Mortlake on Sunday, May 19.
From 10am the tour will begin at Mortlake Cemetery, on Cemetery Lane off the Hamilton Highway.
After a short talk the tour will proceed South West to the intersection of Connewarren Lane and Thorburns Lane (past the racecourse), where another plaque is situated.
From there it will travel south west down the Hopkins Highway and turn right onto Bridge Road, and right again into Woodford where another plaque is situated in Merri Street.
After a short talk it proceeds along Bridge Road to the Warrnambool-Caramut Road intersection, turning right and then a short distance later turn left on to the Koroit-Mailors Flat Road into Koroit turning right into Woolsthorpe Road and arrive at the entrance to the former Koroit Racecourse where another plaque is situated.
The group then return to Koroit and travel onto the Warrnambool Cemetery, to the grave of “Whiskey Tom’ Delaney.
The tour concludes at the Old Warrnambool Gaol (now the South West TAFE site) in Gillies Street.
At the completion Whiskey Stills members are adjourning to the Warrnambool RSL for lunch.
