More than 100 Italian-inspired vehicles called in to the South West Kart Club to complete a time trial as part of Targa Classica 2024.

In 2017, the inaugural Australian event became the first event outside Italy to run under the Targa Florio’s historic marque.

To this day, the Targa Florio is considered one of the world’s most historic and unique events for classic car enthusiasts.

Targa Classica continues to grow in popularity in Victoria, with the route meticulously planned to provide the best experience for competitors.

Taking in the best roads Victoria has to offer, competitors drove over 1000km and competed in around 70–80 time trials over four days.

The route also takes in as many opportunities for communities and spectators to enjoy the spectacle as possible.

The contingent set off from Warrnambool last Wednesday morning, arriving in Cobden between 10am and 11.30am before journeying on to Forrest and stopping at Torquay for the night.

Cars and their drivers were from across the country including Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria.

Participants took part in one of two categories – classic cars and the more modern legend category which included a 2012 12C Spider McLaren.

Targa Classica official Cameron Jay said the group enjoyed their time at the South West Kart Club.

“They are having a timed run around the go kart track,” he said.

“It’s a very good track; I was a Go Kart racer as a kid, I think it’s great.

“Who doesn’t want to come down and play here.”

Victorian entrant Michelle Barry made the journey with her Mercedes 1959 190SL Roadster.

She said the lap around the local Go Kart track was “so much fun”.

“Our phone conked out so we didn’t have a speed,” Ms Barry said.

“We are the first all girl team that’s even been in a Targa rally.

“I’d encourage anyone to get involved. It’s just a lot of fun.”

Ms Barry said there was a family link with car racing for her, with her great aunt a former car racer.

She was pleased to be able to take part in the rally after owning her Mercedes 1959 190SL Roadster for more than 30 years.
