Temporary bridge at Princetown closed

RISING water levels at Princetown led Corangamite Shire Council to close the temporary floating bridge at Old Coach Road as a precaution.

Montarosa Pty Ltd director Gavin Ronan said the temporary Gellibrand River bridge on Old Coach Road, Princetown was closed to vehicles last Friday afternoon.

“The current large weather system and swell has raised river levels considerably in recent days and is expected to worsen over the weekend, necessitating this action in accordance with conditions of the planning permit associated with the current bridge replacement works,” he said.

“Corangamite has advised that pedestrian access will remain in place over the temporary bridge for now but vehicle access will not return until river levels recede and Corangamite receives advice the temporary bridge is safe to reopen to vehicle traffic.

“During August bridge and roadworks continued in accordance with the planning permit and endorsed documents, including road works on the east side of the bridge to tie in the new bridge to Old Coach Road. “

Mr Ronan said a further update was expected this month regarding the new bridge’s opening to traffic, subject to temporary bridge re-opening, the completion of all necessary new bridge related works and council’s subsequent approval of the new bridge.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience of these works for the community and appreciate the ongoing understanding and patience while the works continue,” he said.
