TERANG and Mortlake Health Service’s (TMHS) operating theatre has received a major boost following the delivery of a new laparoscopic surgery tower.

At a cost of just under $200,000, the acquisition of this specialised item of medical equipment will enable the health service’s visiting surgeons to now undertake a broad range of less invasive keyhole surgical procedures including hernia repairs, arthroscopes, gall bladder surgeries and gynaecological procedures.

To accommodate a wider range of surgical procedures available locally with the addition of the laparoscopic equipment, TMHS also has four visiting surgeons providing services from the Terang Hospital following the recruitment of two general surgeons, a specialist obstetrician and a gynaecological surgeon in the past year.

TMHS chief executive officer Julia Ogdin thanked local community groups for their generous fundraising efforts.

“Terang and Mortlake Health Service is excited about the prospect of being able to provide a wider array of surgical services to the community, closer to home,” she said.

“The expansion of surgical services also supports our larger regional partners to increase their throughput of more urgent surgical patients.

“It is all about working collaboratively and as a team in a regional approach.”

Ms Ogdin thanked members of the Terang Community Op-Shop, Rotary Club of Terang, Terang and District Lions Club, the Terang Flyers Murray to Moyne Cycle relay team and the Terang and District Racing Club.

These groups collectively raised almost $55,000 in donations towards the cost of the Laparoscopic Tower and specialised surgical instruments.

“Our Health Service and community owe a debt of gratitude to the hard working members of our service clubs and the Terang Community Op-Shop,” Ms Ogdin said.

“Year after year, these wonderful groups provide us with vital financial support to purchase medical equipment that we would otherwise not be able to acquire without their help.”
