Terang Funakoshi punches above its weight

AFTER 260 days of lockdowns over the past two and a half years, interruptions to training, and tournament competitions via video conferencing, Terang Funakoshi Karate Club was in celebration mode this week.

AFTER 260 days of lockdowns over the past two and a half years, interruptions to training, and tournament competitions via video conferencing, Terang Funakoshi Karate Club was in celebration mode this week.

The club sent members to compete in round one the National All Styles tournament in Doncaster as part of the Funakoshi International Australia tournament squad, with members returning some excellent results.

While Terang dojo sensei Peter Conroy enjoyed a win in his continuous sparring event and the team Kata group also won first place, club members Emma Bonner and Mark Cole made their tournament debuts.

Veteran kata and veterans team kata state champion Jill Cole also brought home a slew of medals, achieving six podium finishes including first place in the open team kata event.

Cole competed in both veterans and open sparring events, in the latter placing among karatekas much younger than herself.

Terang Funakoshi Karate Club results:

Open team kata event: 1st place – Jill Cole, Tobi Cole, Brian Peach.

Girls 10-11 years point sparring: 2nd place – Ava Bonner.

Veteran male continuous sparring: 1st place – Peter Conroy; 3rd place – Brian Peach.

Veteran female continuous sparring: 2nd place – Jill Cole.

Veteran female point sparring: 2nd place – Jill Cole.

Black belt open female continuous sparring: 2nd place – Jill Cole.

Black belt open female point sparring: 2nd place – Jill Cole.

Veteran kata: 2nd place – Jill Cole; 3rd place – Peter Conroy.
