Winner: Kolora’s Remy Herry, 11, earned a big win at the recent Victorian Agricultural Shows state final for baking.

Remy, 11, had seen success in baking competitions at local agricultural shows in Warrnambool and Camperdown, which earned her way to the Victorian finals.

At the finals, held as part of the Victorian Agricultural Shows Convention on Saturday, June 29, she submitted her carrot and date muffins, where she was judged winner among the 10 finalists from across the state.

“I had entered the Warrnambool Show last year and I won in the kids fruit cake and carrot muffin,” she said.

“If you win you get to go to the group level (South Western Group) which was held in Camperdown earlier this year.

“Winning there got me to state finals, and I was fortunate enough to win there.”

Remy said she could not put in to words her excitement finding out she had won at the state level, which included competition against older, more experienced finalists.

“I don’t know how I felt,” she said.

“I was in shock.”

Each of the finalists were required to follow a specific recipe, ensuring consistency in ingredients would allow the best baker to shine through on their technique and preparation.

“The recipe had a lot of liquid, but it turned out fine,” she said.

“They check for texture and how it looks, and they cut a muffin in half to see how well mixed it was.

“The muffins are really good when they’re warm.”

Remy said she has been baking for only around two years, but has always had an interest as cooking has been a way for the family to bond.

“I like baking,” she said.

“A few years ago my family had a cake competition.

“I bake a lot with my aunty, who is very good at it.”

Remy’s mother, Nicola Herry, said she was proud to see her daughter earn a big win, and also to find something she enjoys and takes pride in.

“It’s really cool to see Remy get recognised,” she said.

“She’s got brothers who are all about sport, so to see Remy find her thing she enjoys is wonderful.”

Remy said she hopes to continue baking in to the future, with a particular interest in helping to make special occasions all the more special for others.

“I really want to bake special cakes for people,” she said.

“Like birthday cakes, engagement cakes and wedding cakes.”

On the map: Remy, representing the south west, was judged to have made the best carrot and date muffins amongst other under 18 winners from agricultural shows across the state.
