Third win for Pies
THE Magpies notched up their third win of the season last weekend with a 35-point victory over Portland.
Playing in front of a home crowd at Leura Oval on Saturday, the Magpies were challenged early in the opening term but according to coach Neville Swayn, the boys responded well.
“We got off to a relatively slow start, kicking 2.6 for the opening term while Portland kicked 3.1 but it was good to see the boys regroup and respond,” Swayn said.
“I was happy with our efforts overall, despite inaccuracy in front of goals.
“That’s something we’ll need to work on and hopefully last Saturday was just a once-off.”
The second quarter proved more fruitful for the side, adding 3.6 to 3.2 to take a handy three-point lead going into the half-time break.
The third quarter was a relatively low scoring one, with both sides struggling to make any great impact on the scoreboard while in the final term the Magpies stepped up the intensity to kick a further 5.6 while containing the Tigers to 1.4.
Final scores were Camperdown 12.21.83 to Portland 8.10.58.
Best for the Magpies were Eric Guthrie, Matthew Field, James O’Neil, Dominic Absalom, Tom Baker and Luke O’Neil.
Sam Gordon kicked three goals for the day while Judah Dundon and Eric Guthrie each contributed two.
Other goal scorers were Dominic Absalom, Tom Baker, Matthew Field, Nick Jones and Harry Sumner (one each).
“We’ll take a few things away from last weekend into our clash with the Eagles tomorrow,” Swayn said.
“They’re sitting second on the ladder and are always a strong force; they’ve got some tall players but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
A four-goal haul to both Tim Fitzgerald and Isaac Stephens in the reserves match led the Magpies to a well-earned 40-point victory, 12.11.83 to 6.7.43.
Fraser Lucas also contributed to the board, kicking two for the day, while Tarkyn Love and Ashley Royal each kicked one.
Among the best for the Magpies were Billy Conheady, Logan Mahony, Jake Muddle, Myles Sinnott, Fraser Lucas and Isaac Stephens.
The Magpies’ under 18 side has held on to fifth spot despite last weekend’s 16-point loss to the Tigers.
After a strong first quarter, the Magpies added two goals to the board in the second but went into the main break five points down.
The Tigers’ continued their momentum into the second half of the game, adding five goals while containing the Magpies to three.
Final scores were Portland 10.5.65 to Camperdown 7.7.49.
Best for the Magpies were Brock Stephens, Myles Sinnott, Darcy Vick, Aidan Conheady, Taj Cunningham and Charlie Kempton.
Stephens, Sinnott and Tarkyn Love each kicked three goals while Darcy Vick contributed one.
On the netball courts, Camperdown’s open side defeated Portland 46-34, with Lily Eldridge, Sophie Conheady and Matilda Pollard named best for the Magpies.

17 and under: Camperdown defeated Portland 44-30. Best: Isla Fleming and Greta Neal.
15 and under: Portland defeated Camperdown 35-22. Best: Kara Bell, Charlotte Hinds and Breeana Daffy.
15 and under reserves: Portland defeated Camperdown 28-17.
13 and under: Camperdown defeated Portland 31-15. Best: Stella Hinds, Taylor Cameron and Madison Lucas.
The Magpies will head to Bushfield Recreation Reserve tomorrow (Saturday) for their round nine clash against the Eagles.
