WOORNDOO Mortlake’s senior footballers have cemented their place in the five with a strong win over neighbours Wickliffe Lake Bolac last weekend.
The Tigers are sitting third on the Mininera League ladder, two games clear of Penshurst in fourth.
The top of the table is tightening with just three rounds remaining, with Tatyoon sitting on top just a game clear of both the Magpies and Tigers, with only percentage now separating those two.
Last Saturday’s much-anticipated game at Bolac saw the first quarter end with both sides sitting at 2.1.13.
The second quarter saw both sides struggling to make any real inroads on the scoreboard, with just nine points separating the two at the main break (with the visitors in front).
A four goal to three third term saw the Tigers extend their lead to 15 points before they put the foot down in the final quarter, adding five goals three while containing the home side to just two majors.
Final scores were Woorndoo Mortlake 15.5.95 to Wickliffe Lake Bolac 9.5.59.
Jordan Buckley booted five for the Tigers, while Matthew Pemberton added three, Justin Snow two and singles from Jacob Fowler, Sam Gervasoni, Jesse Horan, Tyson Osborne and Will Paulin.
Paulin and Pemberton were listed in the Tigers best along with Haydn Templeton, Jack Spokes, Sam Gervasoni and Justin Snow.
The Tigers’ reserves also sit third on the ladder, equal on points with Lismore Derrinallum in second and SMR Rovers in fourth.
The Tigers put in four solid quarters last weekend to defeat the Pies by 88 points, 15.13.103 to 2.3.15.
Grant Cameron kicked six for the Tigers, while Tom Carmichael added three and Mac Shaw kicked two.
Goals also went to Tom Gough, Brody Mifsud and Tyler Seabrook.
Among the best were Gough, Mitch Walsh, Seabrook, Samuel Whytcross, Carmichael and Cameron.
The Tigers had a strong day out on the netball court, with wins in three of the four matches played. Both A grade and the 18 and under sides had a bye round.
With three rounds of the home and away season remaining, the Tigers’ netballers are currently sitting in the top three in all grades of senior and junior competition.
Results from last weekend’s round were as follows:
B grade – Woorndoo Mortlake defeated Wickliffe Lake Bolac 54-12. Best players: Emma Shippen and Jaime Killen.
C grade – Woorndoo Mortlake defeated Wickliffe Lake Bolac 40-12. Best: Lucy Finnerty and Taliah Kelly.
15 and under –Wickliffe Lake Bolac defeated Woorndoo Mortlake 25-22. Best players: Ava Wardlaw and Hannah Leske.
13 and under - Woorndoo Mortlake defeated Wickliffe Lake Bolac 25-9. Best players: Chloe McQualter and Layla Wardlaw.
The Tigers will this Saturday host Caramut, who will be coming off a 187-point loss to Hawkesdale Macarthur last weekend.
