Tigers finish on top
SIMPSON’S Corangamite Bowls Division’s grand final jinx is broken.

SIMPSON’S Corangamite Bowls Division’s grand final jinx is broken.
That’s only if you ask its midweek bowlers, who secured the division two premiership last Tuesday.
Simpson defeated Colac City (2) 70-66 in a nailbiter at Colac Bowling Club.
Premiership player Barry Newcombe said the club was thrilled to add another flag to its coffers.
“We got belted last year so to turn around and win this one was a good effort,” he said.
“A team effort (was the key), that was the main thing for us in winning.
“The ladies were saying the jinx is broken. Last year we got to the grand final and got beaten after being 20 shots up but they reckon the jinx is broken now.
“We lost a couple of players from the club over that but we were lucky we got three back from Timboon this year and they’re all good players which makes a big difference.”
Newcombe said Simpson last won a flag in division three but had failed to progress out of division two for some time.
But he revealed the best part of winning had nothing to do with the outcome.
“We’ve been sitting in division two for a fair while but the best part about it was we had mostly women playing whereas they had seven men play,” Newcombe said.
“We had two players away which was unfortunate but we also had two new girls this year and they did an excellent job in their first year of bowls.”
Newcombe said the prospect of playing division one would be a good challenge for the club’s midweek bowlers.
“They’ve never known what it’s like but once they’ve played a few games they’ll get an idea of it,” he said.
“We mightn’t be good enough but we’re there – that’s what you strive for.”
In the other grades, Colac (1) defeated Winchelsea (1) to win the division one premiership at Colac City, while Colac Central (2) was too good for Colac City (3) 76-57 in division three.
