Tigers hold hope for top five finish

A WIN this weekend and a “little luck” with other match results could just see Simpson’s senior footballers sneak into the top five.

This Saturday’s final round of the Colac and District League will see the Tigers up against the ninth-placed Birregurra in what coach Daniel Beard is confident will notch up their 10th win of the season.

“If the cards fall right, this Saturday could see us take win number 10 for the season and that’s a real credit to every player,” Beard said.

“Usually if you win 10 of the 18 rounds you can sneak into the top five but as it is at the moment, with us sitting a game out in sixth, we not only need to win but also rely on either Colac Imperials or South Colac to lose.”

Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, Beard is extremely proud of what the Tigers have been able to achieve this season.

“We have beaten teams in third and fifth during the home and away season and while our return match against Imps unfortunately didn’t go our way, there really isn’t any other games that we can reflect on and say we should’ve won,” he said.

“You can never bank on anything in football; we’ve enjoyed the season and if finals eventuates for us then that’s a bonus.”

Round 17 last weekend saw the Tigers enjoy an at-home win against Apollo Bay, 12.16.88 to 6.6.42.

Jarrod Garth kicked six majors for the day while Nicholas Harding and Mitch Reed both kicked two and Bradley Gillingham and Mitch Wright kicked one each.

Among the best players were Ryleigh McVilly, Garth, Jack Finn, Cody Mason, Brock Neal and Gillingham.

The Tigers reserves sit on top of their ladder and celebrated a 106-point win over Apollo Bay last weekend, 18.18.126 to 3.2.20.

Brodie Neale had a great day out in front of goals, booting home seven, while Brayden Hawkes, Darcy Thorburn, Bailey Vines and David Weel each contributed two.

Jason Kordupel, Jake Reed and Sam Riel kicked a goal each.

Among the best players were Brayden Hawkes, Brodie Neale, Jamie Barry, Harry Fleming, Jason Kordupel and Andrew Irwin.
