Tigers on the prowl

SIMPSON’S senior footballers now sit just a game outside the top five on the Colac District ladder after a win last weekend.

The Tigers travelled to Irrewillipe Recreation Reserve on Saturday to take on Western Eagles in wet and slippery conditions.

Senior coach Daniel Beard was impressed with the way his side quickly adapted from dry to wet footy, and stuck to the basics.

“The ground did get a little bogged up later in the afternoon but overall the conditions weren’t too bad; certainly not as bad as many other grounds around the district which is a real credit to the Eagles,” he said.

“We were still able to get our hands on the ball and handle it well so that was pleasing.

“Nine wins for the season is definitely on the cards for us but we’ll be chasing 10 which will get us into the top five.”

Beard said he believed his side was a real finals contender and carried the self-belief needed to win pressure games.

“Last weekend we went back to playing simple footy and that’s what we do well,” he said.

“Marc Jamar was huge in the ruck and dominated all day, Tom Leishman was solid in the midfield and Nick Duynhoven and Jono Jennings were also strong.

“Our back six worked really hard and limited their scoring opportunities.”

Final scores were Simpson 9.6.60 defeated Western Eagles 3.6.24.

Best for the Tigers were Jamar, Thomas Leishman, Brad Salmon, Ryleigh McVilly, Jack Hookway and Darcy Leishman.
