Tigers ready to roll

SIMPSON bowler Peter Inglis admits plenty of unknown still surrounds season 2021/22 ahead of the Tigers opening round clash this weekend.
Corangamite bowls will finally start its season this Saturday, with Simpson set to welcome top grade returnee Winchelsea to Simpson.
It will start some four weeks after it was originally fixtured, with COVID restrictions delaying the start of the season.
But it comes with plenty of change, with clubs within the West Coast Region dealing with a mandate which requires players to be double vaccinated to play pennant competitions which will impact availability in the early rounds.
Inglis said the early rounds presented some unknown to the competition but he added Tigers were looking forward to pennant starting.
He said the side was eager to bounce back from a disappointing 2020/21 campaign, with the Tigers finishing eighth on the ladder with just three wins.
“We have lost a couple from last year who have moved out of the area and a couple have family commitments and things like that but having said that we have two or three new bowlers which we’re enthusiastic about,” Inglis said.
“The club’s on a bit of a high with the new players coming in but how we will line-up is up in the air because we’ll have one or two unavailable because of COVID restrictions and we’re a bit unsure what position Winch is in and how they will line-up too.
“But the bulk of the side has been around for a little while now, our skippers and thirds are fairly settled so that should hold us in good stead no matter the opposition we play.”
Inglis, the Bowls Victoria president, said overall he was expecting a close competition once clubs settled their line-ups.
“After the first week or two when everyone becomes available it should be pretty tight,” he said.
“This year we need to play more than eight games to constitute a season and we’ve already lost four games.
“We’re starting at round five and we have to see with outbreaks and that how we go but having said that, it’s (games being impacted) looking unlikely now.
“Obviously Colac and Colac City have the numbers and will always be up there but apart from that the rest of us just do what we can and hope we can get into some good form and see where that takes us.”
In other opening day matches, Cobden faces Colac (2) at Colac, Camperdown hosts Colac Central, Colac City welcomes Camperdown Golf and Lorne takes on Colac (1) at Lorne.
