SIMPSON’S senior footballers got within a goal of victory over Lorne last weekend.

The Tigers had a shot after the siren on Saturday but unfortunately the ball drifted to the right of the post, leaving them just five points short of their first win for season 2023.

“At the end of the day we could have played the top three sides so far,” senior coach Daniel Beard said.

“As much as we could be down about not winning, and being zero from three so far, the boys are right in there and playing some great footy.

“We’ve been right in the game with all three sides we’ve met to date. We’re playing good, solid footy and the spectators are enjoying some great matches. A win is just around the corner.”

Beard said he was confident the Tigers are in a “really good space” and with about half a dozen players on the injury list soon to become available, team selections will be tough.

“We never use injuries as an excuse for the scoreboard but we do currently have five or six out at the moment and we’re hoping they’ll all be available in a week or so,” Beard said.

“That will leave us with quite a challenge come selection time. I’m really proud of the entire squad and we always go into each game confident we can get the job done.”

The Tigers will face Colac Imperials this weekend – a side that narrowly defeated them in last year’s elimination final.

“They (Imps) also recruited well but they lost to Birregurra last weekend and will also be hungry for a win,” Beard said.

Final scores last Saturday were Simpson 8.7.55 to Lorne 9.6.60.

Among the best for the Tigers were Jamie Barry, Brock Neal, Jesse Gallichan, Rhys Ziegelaar, Matthew Drayton and Nicholas Harding.

Goals went to Ziegelaar (4), Harding (2) and one each to Darcy Leishman and Brock Neal.

Simpson’s reserve side was faced with an in-form Lorne and struggled on the scoreboard, managing just two behinds for the game to go down by 68 points, 0.2.2 to 9.16.70.

Best for the Tigers were Cody Mason, Andrew Irwin, Jason Kordupel, Jaryd Duynhoven, Rohan Johns and Sam Rial.

Simpson’s A grade netballers had a tough match against Lorne, falling seven goals short of a win, 37-44. Best on court: Sophie Cronin, Carol Arndell and Chloe Woods.

Other netball results were as follows:
