Timboon Lions Club notes

IN a small club such as ours we occasionally have to scratch our heads when looking to find a project or activity which is of sufficient appeal to excite obvious community interest. Not so last month or this one!

Timboon Lions Club members hosted a booked out Skin Cancer Check Caravan over two days

Members, some of who have recently returned from holidaying in warmer climes, were thrilled to find an enjoyable heap of work lined up for them.

Above all, this work involved them in hosting the V2 Lions Skin Cancer Check Caravan for two days – November 30 and December 1.

Timboon Lions Club was given the responsibility to provide a venue, look after the three dermoscopists and the van driver as well as advertise for and accept bookings.

The whole project turned out to be a resounding success. The Timboon Recreational Reserve Committee was more than happy to provide us gratis an ample space in their grounds.

The appointment book was completely full within two weeks of the advertisements appearing and 120 clients were checked – 43 males and 77 females.

Of these, 56 (45 per cent of the males and 53 per cent of the females) were advised to seek further checks from an appropriate medical source.

Seventy-six of the clients seen had never had a skin cancer check before.

On the social side of the visit, the Skin Check crew were treated to dinner by our club at the Timboon Berry Farm Restaurant. Needless to say they were highly impressed that Timboon boasts such a delightful dining venue.

The day after the Skin Check Caravan visit, Timboon Lions were again at pleasurable work cooking a luncheon barbecue for a Timboon Health Care function.

To keep our coffers reasonably healthy we have recently collected and sold a large consignment of used car and other large batteries.

Also, our Christmas cake sales, both at the Timboon Action Farmers Market and through our usual kindly disposed outlets are going well.

If any of you can think of a project or activity which we Lions could undertake next year, please don’t hesitate to let me, president David Gamble (5501 9738), Lion Ray Smith (0429 983 747) or any other Timboon Lion know about it or, better still, join us in doing it.

In the meantime, all of us in Timboon Lions wish our fellow citizens a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
