Top athletes honoured

SOUTH West Acadamy of Sport (SWAS) has honoured its top athletes for 2023.

A special presentation evening, held at Deakin’s Warrnambool campus last week, recognised the efforts of several athletes for their commitment to their sporting pathway, personal development and leadership roles within SWAS.

Over the past 12 months, SWAS saw 70 athletes represented across 12 Olympic sports, with 90 per cent competing at regional level, 60 per cent at state level and 20 per cent at national and international level.

Congratulations to the following athletes on their achievements.

Strength and conditioning awards:

Moyne Shire – Harley Pickford (clay target shooting).

Corangamite Shire – Ava Cunningham (hockey).

Warrnambool City – Monty Darcy (tennis) and Jake Elliott (clay target shooting).

Holistic Achievement Award:

Corangamite – Mitchell Plozza (basketball), Jarrod Ferguson (cross country) and Stevie Godber (track and field).

Warrnambool – Roy Savage (tennis) and Reese McIntyre (netball).

Sports Awards:

Cycling – Freya Miller.

Golf – Joseph Brown.

Hockey – Jake Pickett.

Individual athlete – Jaylen Brown (professional contract in the Italian Basketball League) and Zoe Addinasall (modern pentathlete, 13th at the world championships in Bath).

Future Leaders Award:

Kyla Groves, Corangamite Shire (netball).

Performance Excellence Award:

Jaylen Brown (wheelchair basketball).
