Top five within reach
COBDEN’S senior footballers now sit just percentage outside the top five on the Hampden League ladder following their win over Port Fairy last weekend.
The Bombers, now sixth but just percentage behind the fifth placed Koroit Saints, showed grit and determination in wet conditions on Saturday.
A lack-lustre opening quarter saw the home side scoreless while the visitors were able to add just three points to the board.
The second term proved rewarding for the Bombers, adding 3.7 to go into the main break with a handy 22-point lead.
While the Seagulls were contained to four majors for the second half, the Bombers worked hard and were rewarded with a 43-point win, 10.10.70 to 4.3.27.
Best for the side were Matthew Kemp, Jesse Williamson, Lachie Davis, Tim Auckland, Benjamin McGlade and Rhys Unwin.
Cobden’s reserves sit second on the ladder, two games clear of the North Warrnambool Eagles after a big win over Port fairy, 13.15.93 to 0.1.1.
Tyler Humphrey and Joshua Worboys each kicked three goals for the Bombers, while Charlie Darcy and Joseph Smith contributed two apiece and Lachlan Herschell, Michael Koroneos and Louis Robertson each kicked one.
Among the best were Humphrey, Louis Darcy, Joseph Smith, Joshua Worboys and Charlie Darcy.
Cobden’s under 18s, sitting just one game out of the five behind Camperdown, celebrated a nine-point victory over the Seagulls, 4.7.31 to 3.4.22.
Gus Walsh, Jonty Robertson, Harvey Wiggins, Kayden Daffy, Campbell Walsh and Parker Walsh were named in the best.
Finn Darcy, Ryan Mottram, Campbell Walsh and Harvey Wiggins each kicked a goal for the day.
Cobden’s Open netballers had to work hard for their five-goal win over the 9th placed Port Fairy, 47-42.
The visitors jumped the Bombers early in the match, taking a 15-7 goal lead at the end of the first quarter and extended that to 10 goals by half-time.
To the Bombers’ credit they regrouped in the second-half and pegged back the difference to just two goals in the third term before a 14 to seven goal final quarter got them over the line.
Best for the Bombers were Nikki Clover, Alicia Blain and Jessica McGlade.
In the remaining five rounds, the Bombers will meet two other top five sides, South Warrnambool in round 15 and North Warrnambool in round 17, making the run home to finals an interesting one.
