YEARS of service to the Camperdown Little Athletics Club has seen Krystal Roberts win the inaugural Henk Gerbes Club Person of the Year Award.
Roberts was chosen for her many years of support, club values and to ensure all athletes can do their best in the sport.
Roberts is a regular parent helper, team leader at region and state events and strong support to committee and athletes on a regular basis.
This special award was due to a generous donation which was created for the first time from past athletes and honours former Cobden policeman Henk Gerbes who was the Camperdown Little Athletics coach from 1977 to 1982.
Former Camperdown athlete Sharon Green (Judd) paid homage to Gerbes dedication to the audience at the Camperdown Sports Precinct.
“Over Henk’s time he coached more than 600 children and dedicated hundreds of hours of his own time to the club,” she said.
“Although he now resides in Wonthaggi, Gippsland, the club is still dear to Henk’s heart. More than 40 years later he still ends his messages to the kids he coached with “Go 44” (the Camperdown Little Athletics Club number).
“Henk’s former little athletes are proud to honour Henk’s dedication by recognising the recipient of (this) award as someone who continues to serve the club with the same spirit and selfless dedication that Henk did.”
The Male Volunteer of the Year was Brad Paton and Female Volunteer of the Year was Jane Hinds.
It was a record-breaking season for the club with 1750 personal bests achieved, 5330 individual results inputted and 130 new athletes, the biggest numbers in over 20 years.
