Tough run home

SIMPSON Tigers face a tough run home after going down to ladder leaders Alvie last weekend.
In wet, muddy conditions at home on Saturday, the under-manned Tigers found themselves playing catch-up footy after the visitors booted 23 points in the first term while holding the home-side scoreless.
“They (Alvie) got an early jump on us in the first quarter but to the boys’ credit it was a pretty even tussle after that,” Tigers coach Daniel Beard said.
“We were missing two of our key onballers and our full forward went out and tried to play but had to come off crook (suspected food poisoning)."
“On the flip side of that, it did give some of our younger blokes the chance to get more game time and really show how far they’ve come, which was pleasing.”
Beard praised the efforts of his team, saying they “fought well in terrible conditions” and, despite the scoreboard, showed they’re capable of keeping up with the top sides.
The Tigers now sit in sixth place, only percentage out of the five.
“Lorne is currently hanging in fifth spot and we will face them in the final round in a couple of weeks’ time – I think that will come down to the winner that day will play finals,” Beard said.
Before that game, the Tigers will front Otway Districts this weekend then second-placed Irrewarra-Beeac the following week.
“Otway has shown a vast improvement this season and as our nearest rivals we expect they’ll come out firing,” Beard said.
“Hopefully we’ll get a few players back this week and the team will lift. Saturday really is a must-win game for us.”
Final scores last weekend were Simpson 2.2.14 to Alvie 9.15.69.
Best for the Tigers were Braden Poole, Jamie Barry, Jack Hookway, Darcy Leishman and Brayden Hawkes.
Goals went to Brayden Hawkes and Jono Jennings.
In the reserves, the Tigers went down by 62 points, 2.3.15 to 10.17.77.
Goal kickers were Daniel Beard and Judson Jennings.
Listed amongst the best were Archie Rial, Matthew Symons, Rohan Johns, Brett Robbins, Shaun Guy and Daniel Wright.
