Tough week for selectors

WITH many players unavailable, last week was a tough one for Cobden Bowling Club selectors.

However, with the help of many ‘fill-ins’ the club was able to secure a draw, a win and a narrow loss last weekend.

The club’s midweek division one pennant team unfortunately suffered a close, six point loss to Colac 1 64-70 which now places them on the bottom of the ladder.

Denis Delaney, Sue Couch, Peter Richardson and Brian Howard won 29-18 over Watson, Watson, Donovan and Gourley.

Dudley, Neal, Williamson and Salmon defeated Bert Strampel, Ann Scott, Trevor Roberts and Doreen Coverdale 28-13.

Margaret Hester, Bazil Hammond, Elaine Telford and Kath Spokes went down to Pekin, McNabb, Gormley and Edwards 22-24.

They will now face Camperdown Golf at Cobden this week and are a chance of winning, with Golf having won only one more game than Cobden.

Division 2 had a bye and are sitting fourth on the ladder, just ahead of Birregurra on percentage.

They will also play at home this week when they host second-placed Derrinallum.

Division two in the weekend pennant managed to secure a draw against Cressy on the slick Cressy rink.

Strong northerly winds made the playing conditions tough.

Colin Hammond, Brendan Hammond, Ben Robertson and Tom Robertson won 26-17 from Keating, Tanis, Alexander and Fay.

Darren Mulgrew, Ashley Sinnott, Ken Lynch and Kathryn Robertson lost 23-29 to Spry, Turner, Robertson and Horne.

Terry Beasley, Brendan Hutt, Bert Strampel and Lauchie Taylor also lost to Carew, Parker, Nelson and White 24-31.

Noah Mungean, Peter Richardson, Greg Rooke and Bazil Hammond won 22-18 against Keating, Stinchcombe, Woods and McEwan.

They are now second on the ladder, but the points are tight from second to sixth.

Having lost the grand final to Colac 3 last year, division three redeemed themselves with a 10 point victory under the dome at Lakes, 72-62.

David Staggard, Margaret Hester, Colin Spokes and Ken Farquharson were the only rink to lose 12-21 to Coates, Ryan Riches and McCarthy.

Trevor Roberts, Pat Hickey Kath Spokes and Jim O’Shea defeated Dudley, Rich, McCarthy and Jackson 19-13.

Richard McVilly, Jeff Hester, David Luker and first gamer Mitch Reed won 19-16, defeating Jackson, Harty, Thompson and Finn.

Leon Carrigan, Janelle Rohan, Keith Simmonds and Brian Howard won 22-12 against Ezard, Dudley, Matthews and Winchcomb.

They have moved into third position on the ladder.

Division four also played under the dome, which created a great atmosphere with both teams at Lakes together.

Unfortunately, after being in front at afternoon tea, they were unable to maintain the momentum and went down 47-52.

Paul Dwyer, Don Anderson, Kevin Rundle and Janine Hutt won 22-18 against Melville, Rooke, Daffy and Gill.

Elaine Telford, Evelyn Grayland, Patsy Neal and Peter Giblett lost 11-20 to Burrell, Middleton, Quigley and Stringer.

Loreign Andrews, Des Couch, Keith Landers and John Raeside came a 14-all draw with Weir, Halliday, Riches and Maher.

This places division four second last on the ladder.
