Trifecta for Bombers

COBDEN has kickstarted its 2023 Hampden League campaign in fine style, defeating reigning premiers Koroit last weekend.
In front of their home crowd at the Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve, the Bombers enjoyed a clean sweep over the Saints, winning the seniors, reserves and under 18s football.
In a thrilling final quarter, the Bombers overrode the Saints, kicking five goals, five behinds while containing the visitors to just one goal, one behind to take the points.
Senior coach Dan Casey said he was “absolutely stoked” to take the points in round one, especially over such a quality side as Koroit.
“We really went into the game with a solid pre-season behind us and I believe that paid dividends, especially in the final quarter,” he said.
“Our legs really kicked in during that final term and it was pleasing to see the boys run out the game. They’d put in a barrel of work in the off-season and it showed.”
Casey paid tribute to the team from Camperdown’s Regional Institute of Sport (RIS) who had worked hard with the club to ensure its players were well-prepared for the new season.
“I’m sure the result was also pleasing to the RIS team and it’s a credit to them for the work they also put in,” he said.
“Our first half was a little worrying to be honest; we were playing like it was an under 14 match and you just can’t afford to do that, especially against quality sides like Koroit.
“That’s something we will need to work on – that and our goal kicking; to finish with 17 behinds isn’t ideal.”
With the bye for Easter this weekend, the side will put in a solid training session tonight (Wednesday) before returning to the track next week in preparation for round two against the Hamilton Kangaroos.
Final scores last Saturday were Cobden 10.17.77 to Koroit 7.7.49.
Among the best for the home side were Charlie Darcy, Mark Marriott, Jesse Williamson, Patrick Smith, Liam Loubey and Henry Robertson.
Paul Pekin, Thomas Spokes and Jesse Williams each kicked two majors for the Bombers, while single goal contributors were Charlie Darcy, Joshua Hickey, Jack Hutt and Grady Rooke.
Earlier in the day the reserves enjoyed a huge 152-point win over the Saints, 24.13.157 to 0.5.5.
Best players were Ashley Rosolin, William Benallack, Louis Robertson, Jia Anderson and Sam Darcy.
Goal kickers were Harry Darcy (3), Thomas Darcy (3), Jack Darcy (2), Sam Darcy (2), Brady Green (2), Harrison Herschell (2), Luke Hickey (2), Ashley Rosolin (2) and one each to Jia Anderson, Luke Pekin and Louis Robertson.
The Bombers’ winning streak began early in the day, with the under 18.5s taking the points over the Saints, 7.8.50 to 3.6.24.
