COACHES replaced trains on the Warrnambool line during a large part of May while commissioning of signalling upgrades between Waurn Ponds and Warncoort took place, as part of Stage 1 of the Warrnambool Line Upgrade.

Work was also completed on the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade, including commissioning of the second platform, duplicated track, pedestrian overpass, lifts, stairs and ramps.

During the disruption, V/Line took the opportunity to complete more than $5 million of infrastructure maintenance and renewal works on the busy section of tracks that Warrnambool trains share with Geelong services.

“Train services that operated on the Warrnambool line during the month recorded strong performance results – as we continue to deliver safe, comfortable and reliable services for passengers,” a V/Line spokesperson said.

“Significant improvements also took place along the south-west corridor in May that will deliver long term benefits for passengers including major works on the Warrnambool Line Upgrade and V/Line’s major program of infrastructure maintenance and renewals.”

The trains which did operate on the Warrnambool line during May recorded strong performance results, with reliability at 98.1 per cent and punctuality at 97.8 per cent.

Both the reliability and punctuality results were among the best on the V/Line network during May.

Meanwhile, coaches are also currently replacing Warrnambool trains between Geelong and Warrnambool from June 20-29 while V/Line completes further maintenance and renewal works along the line, with crews working between Warrnambool and Winchelsea duringthis period.

“The works include the replacement of a bridge surface at Winchelsea and the replacement of a culvert, which allows water to pass under the track at Warncoort,” the V/Line spokesperson said.

“These works are critical to ensuring the infrastructure is in good condition for trains to travel over and important for the ongoing upkeep of the line."

“The works are in the same location as the Warrnambool Line Upgrade (WLU) works which took place during May, so have had to be scheduled at different times to ensure both packages of works can be carried out safely.”
