A SENSATIONAL night of Corangamite volleyball finals won the praise of spectators on Tuesday night with Poachers (A grade) and Cooriemungle Bulls (B grade) finally claiming premiership honours.

The Bulls, who were very clinical with skillful play throughout their two matches, will certainly return to the higher grade finals next season if they maintain consistency.

They eliminated the Scotts Creek Stags 2-1 in the preliminary final before taking on the clubhouse leader Slugs in the decider.

Although they tried very hard, the Slugs were no match as the Bulls’ most valuable player Luis led from the front and dominated. Final result, a 3-0 victory.

While B grade produced precision and sublime skills, the three A grade matches struggled to reach such heights – but two of them went to tie-breakers.

Poachers enjoyed a relatively easy 3-0 win over Bungador Spikers in their semi-final but there was very little between NOBTS and Ballbusters in their clash.

The Ballbusters jumped out of the blocks in the first set but NOBTS grabbed the next two. The veterans may have tired from that point because Ballbusters came home strongly to equal at 2-2 and take the tie-breaker in extra time.

The grand final was no different with a huge momentum swing occurring after two sets. Ballbusters’ strong serving enabled them to run to a 2-0 lead before Poachers gained some composure and actually engaged in the match.

At full-time, the score was 2-2 and it was left to another tie-breaker to decide the A grade premiership.

Ultimately, Poachers asserted themselves to sneak over the line.

Despite losing the final, Ballbusters’ Brayden Crow was adjudged the most valuable player in the match.

No doubt, Poachers will be the hunted team in the winter season beginning on Tuesday July 12.
