Volunteers serve up a feast
PANCAKE Day lived up to its name last week when a team of volunteers served up a feast to the Mortlake community.

Members of the Mortlake Uniting Church were hard at work cooking up batches of pancakes for those visiting the Uniting Church hall, and for those who had ordered their deliveries through stores in town.
Uniting Church volunteer Heather Rowe said the day started a little slow, but picked up nicely.
“We had lots of pancakes sold,” she said.
“This year things seemed to spread out across the day more so we didn’t have as many periods of being as busy as usual.
“We were really happy with how it went; it was a really good day.”
Money raised through the sale of pancakes will be used to support the efforts of the Uniting Church’s Share Appeal.
The Share Appeal is used to assist the most vulnerable and marginalised members of the community when they need it most.
“We made plenty of money to support such a great initiative,” Mrs Rowe said.
“It can help a lot of people, especially homeless people.
“We are happy to support the church workings and whoever needs help through the Share Appeal.”
Mrs Rowe said Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, was an important event on the church calendar.
The sale of pancakes on the day to raise funds not only supports a worthy cause, but also helps church members connect with the wider community.
“It’s good for the community, and it’s good for us too because we feel we’re part of the community,” Mrs Rowe said.
“Shrove Tuesday is special to us because it’s the start of Lent, a Christian tradition 40 days before Easter, but even for those who don’t follow the faith it is a way for us all to be included.”
