Walsh named Player of the Week
COBDEN’S Parker Walsh was named Player of the Week during the recent under 17 Country Week competition.
Walsh, who played an integral role as captain of the South West Cricket side throughout Country Week, took 10 wickets at an average of 7.9.
He was also effective with the bat, making 64 runs with an average of 21.33.
Fellow Cobden cricketer Edmund Walsh also contributed to South West’s success as vice-captain while Campbell Walsh was deputy vice-captain.
The South West team was defeated in last weekend’s grand final, going down toWarrnambool Moyne Gold at Reid Oval last Friday.
After a successful week-long tournament, which saw the South West players show great skill with both bat and ball, Friday’s grand final match was a close one.
Having lost the toss, South West was sent in to bat first.
Openers Albie Cheeseman (9) and Campbell Walsh (40) got the team off to a strong side and were well supported by team-mates Edmund Walsh (15) and Parker Walsh who finished the inning sunbeaten on 42.
After 40 overs, South West was 9/138.
In reply, Warrnambool Moyne Gold reached 4/139 in the 35th over.
Best of the bowlers in the grand final for South West was Edmund Walsh with 2/31 from seven overs.
Other wickets fell for Paddy Hassett 1/23 and Levi Cootesmith 1/0 off one.
