Wandering for a good cause
ONE Camperdown resident has begun pounding the pavement of the town for a worthy cause, and is already making significant progress.
Peter James is participating in The Smith Family’s Dream Run fundraiser this month, aiming to walk 200 kilometres - and has already completed 44 kilometres as at time of publication.
The Dream Run raises funds to allow The Smith Family to address educational inequality faced by disadvantaged children due to poverty.
Mr James said he saw a post on Facebook talking about the fundraiser by chance.
“My daughter’s sister is actually sponsored by the Smith Family. I thought ‘OK, I’ll do that’,” he said.
“I’m hoping to raise at least $200, a dollar for every kilometre.
“If you raise $190, it raises two primary school packs to help kids.
“Three hundred and sixty dollars gets ten book packs for kids, while $660 pays for a child’s education for a year.
“I’m going to get there – I know I will.”
Of the initial $200 goal, Mr James has so far raised $61.27, earning him a ‘gold star’ classification.
Mr James said he’ll likely achieve close to 300 kilometres walked for the month despite his goal and encouraged residents to make a donation to the cause.
“I’m really looking forward to doing this,” he said.
“You may see me – I’m always waking around town, and I will continue doing it.
“I love walking, and I’m always wanting to help the community.”
Donations can be made through Mr James’ Facebook page, or online at www.thedreamrun.com.au/fundraisers/peterjames/the-dream-run-2024.
