AFTER several wash-outs and venue changes, Mortlake’s division one cricketers were finally able to take to their new turf wicket at Wilsons DC Farran Oval last weekend.

While the side was pleased to finally enjoy a home game, the end result didn’t quite go to plan – with the Cats suffering a 37-run loss to visitors West Warrnambool.

Senior coach Todd Lamont said while it was “great to finally play at home on the new wicket” the pitch was “pretty tough going.”

“The new wicket didn’t really play that well; it had been rolled a lot in recent weeks and there wasn’t much grass left on it which made it slow, there wasn’t a lot of bounce and it was hard batting,” Lamont said.

“It was probably ready about four weeks ago which is a shame we didn’t play on it back then but it will get some work done on it in preparation for this Saturday’s home game.

“It was nice to have a home game and there was a good crowd there supporting us so it’s just a bit disappointing we couldn’t get the win. But we’ll soldier on and hopefully things turn around for us this weekend.”

Jack Lehmann was one of the shining lights for the Cats at the crease, making 23, along with Lachie Higginson on 11 and Lamont with 10.

“We didn’t really do much with the bat and finished on 10/71. Jack and Lachie were really the only two who managed to string a few runs together.”

Best of the bowlers for the Cats were Lamont with 3/19 off nine, Lehmann 3/17 off eight and Clinton Baker 3/14 off seven.

West Warrnambool took the points with 108 runs.

In division two, Mortlake 8/199cc defeated Port Fairy 10/123.

Ben Howarth 54, Oscar Ritchie 35, Neil Kelly 28 and Damian Goddard 24 were the best of the batters while Ritchie also took 3/35, supported by Jamie Wareham 2/10.

Mortlake’s division four side also took the points, finishing on 3/84 to Koroit’s 4/83cc.
