THE track was rated a “heavy six” and no records were broken – but the field was a colourful one as it made its way down Manifold Street on Cup Day.

Members of the Lakes and Craters’ runners group enjoyed somewhat of a later start than normal – due to Tuesday’s public holiday – but still managed to complete the eight-kilometre circuit.

The field made its way around the inside of the Camperdown racecourse before racing down to the town’s main street and galloping to the finish line.

Pre-race crowd favourite ‘Thunder Thighs’ wasn’t well supported by the bookies and went in at high odds but stumbled across the line in last place.

‘Vegemite’ came in third but when the Camperdown Chronicle went to print the top two finishes were still being decided in an extremely close photo-finish.

Fashions on the Field was also hotly contested, with first prize awarded to Gary ‘Red’ O’Neil.

The Lakes and Craters’ runners group meets three times a week; each Tuesday and Thursday at 6am and every Sunday at 8am.

New members are most welcome and can contact Gary O’Neil for information on 0419 302 436.
