Whitehead and Reynolds to lead Gold
JANELLE Whitehead and Debra Reynolds have been appointed co-captains of Pomborneit Maroon for season 2024/25.
This announcement follows the earlier appointments of Samantha Coxon as captain and Jess Moulden as vice-captain of the Pomborneit Gold women’s team.
Whitehead and Reynolds are based in Elliminyt and both are entering their fifth season of cricket with Pomborneit.
Whitehead, winner of Pomborneit Maroon’s last two team champion awards, has her entire family of four playing at Pomborneit and is excited by the new challenge.
“We are looking to continue engaging with our younger players and continue the development of all players, young and old, in a fun but competitive environment,” Whitehead said.
Reynolds also has her entire family of five playing at Pomborneit and has previously captained the Maroon team in 2022/23.
“Improving every week and climbing the ladder are our goals,” she said.
Pomborneit Maroon will take on Simpson at Simpson in this Sunday’s first round of matches.
Pomborneit’s division one men’s team started the 2024/25 season with a 71-run win over Cobden at MCP Oval.
After winning the toss, Pomborneit elected to bat against last season’s grand finalist.
An 81-run partnership for the second wicket between opener Dave Murphy and former skipper Grant Place saw the Bulls at 2/102 when Place was caught for 41 from 45 balls.
Murphy continued his form of last season with an impressive 73 from 88 balls.
Some good contributions through the middle order from TharakaSendanayake (28 from 43), new vice-captain Josh Place (29 from 51) and the hard hitting Tom Darcy (42 from 43 balls) saw the Bulls score 9/256 from their 50 overs on a slowish MCP Oval.
Cobden made it to 21 before losing their first wicket, Jonty Robertson out LBW to new recruit Simon Day giving the 18 year-old seamer his maiden wicket in maroon and gold.
Lahiru Fernando, playing his first match for Pomborneit since the 2020/21 season, took his first wicket, a smart stumping by Dave Murphy to remove Parker Walsh.
Cobden opener Matt Boyle smashed an aggressive 54, Finn Tolland claimed his wicket with Gavin Reynolds taking a skied catch at mid-off.
Soon after, Tolland removed Kaplan McCann, caught at slip by Lahiru Fernando.
Cobden put together a couple of partnerships, skipper Matt Bignell taking two wickets to further push through the Knights batting order.
A Simon Day run-out had the visitors at 8/181 - Gavin Reynolds and Lahiru Fernando taking the final two wickets to round out a good win for Pomborneit.
Pomborneit’s under 17 boys have played two games so far.
Their round one game at Simpson was washed out after 12 overs, racing to 0/117 before heavy rain and lightning saw the game called off.
Ben Whytcross top scored with 42 from the 30 ball retirement mark, Ollie Delaney made 20 from 30 balls while Gavin Reynolds was 33 not out when the game was called.
In round two on Tuesday night at CMTP Oval in Colac, batting first the under 17 Bulls were dismissed for 118.
Ben Whytcross continued his good form with 33 from29 balls, Jonty Raven impressed with 20 from 34 balls in his first innings at under 17 level, while George Sadler worked hard for his 15 not out.
In reply the junior Bulls made Colac work hard; the home team passing the score in the 26th over on their way to 6/147.
Max Rees, with 1/6 from four overs, was the best of the bowlers, consistently hitting the spot at good pace.
Gavin Reynolds took two wickets, with a wicket each to Levi Cootesmith, Josh Reynolds and Jonty Raven.
The under 14 boys scheduled season opener at Alvie last Friday night was called off due to Thursday and Friday’s rain.
This week sees division one play Ecklin at MCP Oval, division two play Eclin at Ecklin and division three venture to Woorndoo to play the home team.
Women’s cricket will start this weekend, with Pomborneit Gold hosting Irrewarra at MCP Oval and Pomborneit Maroon away at Simpson.
The under 17 girls will play round one, with Pomborneit Gold hosting Irrewarra at MCP Oval and Pomborneit Maroon will have the bye.
On Friday night the under 14 boys will play Stoneyford at Pirron Yallock, while on Tuesday night the under 17 boys will host City United at MCP Oval.
