COMMUNITY groups cashed in on more than $45,000 under the latest round of Mortlake South Wind Farm developer Acciona’s sponsorship program.

Sponsorship recipients gathered at a morning tea event at Mac’s Hotel in Mortlake last week to celebrate.

A total of $45,050 was awarded to 13 different schools and community organisations, including:

• Cooinda Terang - $10,000 towards going solar at the new specialist disability accommodation house;

• Mortlake College - $4800 for gym equipment to convert the school gym to a community gym;

• Noorat Primary school - $2500 towards a kitchen garden;

• Music Homestead - $2000;

• Western Plains Spinners, Weavers and Craft Group - $3000 to replace seating;

• Terang Progress Association - $3000 towards the Colour Terang Festival; and

• Kirrae Health Service - $5000 to support Koko Blokes, an initiative designed to help keep kids aged seven-17 out of the criminal justice system.

Another school to receive funding was St Coleman’s Primary School, with $3000 donated.

“We are hoping to install a bike track in our playground”, school principal Janet Cain said.

“The idea is our students will be able to gain the benefits of exercise and will be able to get out and about more often, getting around on bikes or skates.”

The funds going to Cooinda will benefit those living with a disability while aligning with Acciona’s mission of boosting sustainable energy.

“We’re building a new shared-support accommodation house which will have solar panels on it,” Cooinda chief executive officer Janice Harris said.

“This funding from Acciona will go towards the panels and battery which stores power.”

Acciona senior community engagement manager Dominic Luddy congratulated the recipients.

“We extend our sincere congratulations to the successful organisations who have received funding through the 2023 Sponsorship Program,” he said.

“We are honoured to continue to support outstanding initiatives that align with our vision of promoting sustainability, community development and social wellbeing.

“Acciona is committed to delivering benefits to the communities local to our wind farms.”

The Mortlake South Wind Farm sponsorship program is in it’s fifth year, with almost $200,000 being donated to various groups.
