Windy conditions lash region, strike trees

WILD winds and weather conditions hit Mortlake and district last week, causing widespread tree damage, including along Mortlake’s Avenue of Honour.
Mortlake State Emergency Service unit member Margaret Edwards said the conditions were “pretty wild”.
Five Mortlake unit members attended four jobs over about two-and-a-half hours last Wednesday night.
Mrs Edwards said the first call-out came through at about 7.50pm, with trees down across a number of roads, including Connewarren Lane.
The Mortlake unit also helped to secure roof damage sustained at a Mortlake property.
Moyne Shire director of infrastructure and environment Trevor Greenberger said the shire conducted remedial works along the Mortlake Avenue of Honour early Thursday morning.
The wind also damaged a number of the Monterey cypress trees, with contractors cutting down branches to ensure the safety of road users along the Hamilton Highway.
